PROJECT NAME

Enhance meaningful participation of women, youth and marginalized groups in political processes and decision-making in Malawi.

Women’s Legal Resources Centre (WOLREC) in partnership with Oxfam is implementing a project titled Promoting Gender Transformative and Youth Inclusive Democracy in Malawi with financial support from European Union and Oxfam Ireland (1st Nov 2023- 31stMarch 2027). The project seeks to enhance meaningful participation of women, youth and marginalized groups in political processes and decision-making in Malawi. The project is being implemented in 7 districts of Rumphi, Mzimba, Salima, Dedza, Machinga, Mulanje and Nsanje. The target groups are 42,768 women, 15,724 youth (18-35 years, 9,434 F and 6,290 M and 4,403 marginalized people (persons with disabilities) (2,642 F and 1,761M).   At community level the project seeks to reach 314,474 community members across the 7 districts. The consortium will work with 6 major political parties with representation in Parliament, namely UDF, DPP, MCP, UTM, AFORD and PP, traditional leaders, male champions, Departments of Disability, Gender and Youth among others. 

The project has 4 outcomes which are; increased commitment and action to adopt and enforce legal and policy frameworks related to Women, Youth and other Marginalized groups’ participation in politics and decision making, inclusive and gender transformative political party regulations and practices that include women, youth and other marginalized people’s representation and equal participation at all levels, women, youth and persons with disabilities have capabilities and are empowered to participate in politics, governance processes and decision-making positions and women, youth and persons with disabilities have improved access to economic opportunities that enable them to contest and be viable for decision making positions.
